American pool owners are going the salt water way. That ' s Salt water chlorine generation. A salt water chlorinator is an amazing device. It ' s very simple. A small amount of plain, pure salt is added to the pool and a simple device is added to your pool equipment by your pool pump. We are always asked if the pool will taste salty. While you can taste the salt, it is 1/11 th the salinity of the ocean. Your pets will drink out of the pool with no ill effects and it will have no adverse reactions with the pool or any pool equipment. Some soups have more salt in them! As the dissolved salt (sodium-chloride) travels through the device, the molecular bond of the salt is broken and the chlorine molecule is released. This free, pure chlorine goes out into the pool, in minute amounts, and sanitizes your pool. It is either destroyed or it re-combines with the sodium to reform into salt. It ' s an endless loop.

When chlorine attaches to a contaminant, it can't always destroy it. When this happens a chemical compound called a chloramine can form. This is very common. It's the presence of chloramines that gives a pool that over chlorinated smell. It causes the red eyes, the hair and skin problems. The treatment of choice is to hyper chlorinate the pool, to shock it. BUT, shock is expensive. You can't swim for a period after administrating it. And it's rough on your pool's finish, (more on that below). You, your family, and your guests all get to swim in those chloramines until you shock.

The pool water is constantly hyper chlorinated as it travels through the pump's plumbing, without ever hyper chlorinating the body of the pool. Swim anytime, all the time. We are seeing an epidemic of pool finish failure. We have a new customer in Gainesville that paid approx. $3000 to have his pool refinished this last June. This came after the pool was refinished only 3 YEARS AGO! Some pool professionals thought that this was occurring because of the regulation forbidding the continued use of asbestos as an additive in the surfacing compound. We have all seen the effects on the life span of paint after regulations were instituted forbidding the addition of lead in house paint. HOWEVER, research now points to the problem arising from elevated levels of "stabilizer" in our pools. How is it getting in there? Simple. Stabilized chlorine tablets . Stabilizer is actually a chemical named cyanuric acid. It's a great product. Think of it as "sun screen" for chlorine. It would be quite a job to keep a pool's chlorine level within acceptable ranges without cyanuric acid. The problem is that this chemical doesn't go away. It only leaves the pool when it's drained, or with splashed out water loss. BUT every stabilized tablet added more and more cyanuric acid. It's not uncommon for us to find this chemical at 3, 4 or more TIMES its recommended level. The evidence is so strong that the largest pool builder in Alachua County now tells their new pool owners that they have a choice of using liquid chlorine or a salt water generator in order to warrant the new finish of their pool! Excessive levels of cyanuric acid are causing the degradation of our pool's finish and the evidence is everywhere.
Concentrated chlorine is a strong corrosive. Throw a 3" tablet into your pool and go on vacation. When you return you won't see the tablet but you can close your eyes and walk around in the pool and you'll find the spot where it dissolved because there will be a shallow HOLE in your pool finish! (Don't try this at home"!) Chlorine tablets do not dissolve evenly. A chlorine tablet dispenser has a screen like device in it but the holes are not real small. This means that as the tablets dissolve, they are constantly releasing small pieces that are shot out of the pool return jets, sinking to the bottom of your pool and making a growing number of little "scars" on your pool's finish. They add up over time.
The PURE-POOL salt water chlorine generator doesn't make cyanuric acid. You, or your pool supply company, can do a very simple test every 3 months to test the level of this chemical.
